I Would Do Anything For You
A poem about the love that changes everything
There is no love as protective and as unconditional as a mother’s love.
It is a love that breaks us down and then puts us back together again. It is the light that gets us through the darkest of tunnels and the overwhelming beauty found within their smile and laughter.
It is a love that requires sacrifice. We lose sleep, patience, and long periods of quiet. We often feel like we might crumble from the enormity of being responsible for another. We no longer are the centers of our own world; rather, we think of our children and how our actions will impact them. We often lose who we once were in the process of discovering who we are becoming as mothers.
Without a doubt, it is the hardest job I’ve ever done.
I can also say with the same certainty, that what I’ve received from it is immeasurable.
When you love someone that much, something shifts inside of you. That shift shatters everything you thought you knew, and it sometimes takes awhile to find your new gravity. When you rearrange the pieces of yourself, you find a new whole, one that doesn’t fit together the same way. However, it is stronger than it had ever been, because it is now melded with a deeper purpose and meaning. It is adhered with love.
I wrote this piece from my book, From the Heart of a Mother, as a reminder of that love and why it is our greatest reason.
I would do anything for you.
I would churn when I’m on empty.
I would sleep with one eye open.
I would face my greatest fears.
I would do anything for you.
I would turn myself inside out to make you smile.
I would stare at an unrecognizable reflection in the mirror.
I would shatter so I can fit the pieces of myself back together.
I would do anything for you.
I would hold my breath until I knew you were okay.
I would protect you at any cost.
I would permanently waltz with worry.
I would do anything for you.
When you looked at me for the first time,
I looked deep inside your eyes, and I knew—
I would do anything.
I would do anything for you.
If you need a reminder of why we do what we do, this is it. Who else is permanently waltzing with worry this week? Let’s talk about it in the comments.
With love,
Randi
